Towing after a crash in Orlando

If anyone is hurt, call 911 first. If the car is out of the way and you can choose, call a tow yourself and say where the car should go. If the police need the road cleared, they call a company from their rotation list.

First, the road

In a crash with no injuries, get the cars out of traffic if they can move. If a car won't move and is in a lane, stay out of the lane and call 911. On I-4 and the toll roads, the Turnpike included, *347 also reaches the Florida Highway Patrol. The data says this matters: 62% of the fatal crashes around Orlando from 2020 to 2024 happened at night, and the roads with the most were busy surface roads like Colonial Drive and Orange Blossom Trail. See the map.

Your tow or theirs

If you can choose, you control the price and the destination. Call, give the exact spot and what's damaged, and ask for the total. If police call a rotation tow because the road has to be cleared, the agency's rate schedule applies and the car goes to that company's lot first. You can have it moved to your shop afterward.

Where the car should go

Your insurer may want to see it before repairs. A body shop you trust is usually a better first stop than a storage lot, which charges by the day. Call your insurer from the scene if you can, and ask where they want it.

Watch for

  • A truck that shows up unasked and pushes for a quick signature. You don't have to use it.
  • Paperwork that authorizes repairs as well as a tow. Read it before signing.
  • No price. Ask for the total and the company's legal name before the car is hooked up.

Questions people in Orlando ask

Will my insurance pay for the tow?

If you have collision or roadside coverage, often yes, at least to a nearby shop. Call your insurer and keep the receipt.

Can I get my things out of the car first?

Yes. Take your registration, insurance card, any medication, phone chargers and anything valuable. A car in a storage lot is harder to get into later.
