A tow truck in Orlando

Call with the exact spot and the car. Say where it should go, and ask for one total before the truck is sent. A tow you ask for has no price cap in Florida, so the phone quote is your protection.

What to tell them on the first call

  • Where the car is. On a highway: the road and direction, and the last exit or mile marker. In a lot: the business name and the row.
  • The exact model and year, and whether it is all-wheel drive or electric. That decides the truck.
  • What is wrong, in a sentence. "Won't start, lights come on" is enough.
  • Where it should go, with the address. Distance is most of the price.

Wheel-lift or flatbed

A wheel-lift truck picks up one end of the car and tows it on the other two wheels. It's quick and fine for most front-wheel-drive cars going a short way. A flatbed carries the whole car. For all-wheel drive, an EV, a low car or a wreck, ask for the flatbed. More on flatbeds.

What moves the price

The hook-up fee and the miles come first. Night work and extra work such as winching add to it. Florida doesn't cap the price of a tow you request; the caps you may have read about only cover tows the owner didn't ask for. The full cost guide.

Where to send it

If you have a mechanic, send it there and call them so they expect it. If it is a dealer repair, check the dealer's service hours; a car dropped after closing sits outside. Sending it home is the cheapest option when you aren't sure what's wrong.

Questions people in Orlando ask

Can I ride in the tow truck?

Some companies allow one passenger and some don't, for insurance reasons. Ask on the phone, especially at night or on the highway, so you aren't left at the roadside.

Do I need to be with the car?

Usually yes for the pickup, so the driver can confirm it is your car and get the keys. Some companies will take a car from a known lot with the keys left at a desk. Ask first.
