Our analysis of federal public data
Orlando crash and road data
I-4 has the reputation. Colonial Drive has the numbers. From 2020 through 2024, NHTSA counted 1,365 fatal crashes in the three counties (Orange, Osceola, Seminole). 84 were on Colonial Drive, 66 on I-4 and 62 on Orange Blossom Trail, and 62% of all of them happened between 6 p.m. and 6 a.m.

What we found
- The surface roads are worse than the interstate. Only 5% of the fatal crashes were on an interstate. 55% were on the numbered highways (interstate, US and state routes) together, which around here means the six-lane roads with driveways and lights: Colonial, Orange Blossom Trail, US 192, Semoran and US 17-92.
- Night is the problem. 59% of the crashes happened in the dark, and the single worst hour was 8 p.m. to 9 p.m., with 102 crashes. A breakdown after sunset on one of those roads is the one to get off the road fast. What to do.
- Kissimmee's main road is on the list. US 192 had 50 fatal crashes, more than the Turnpike or any toll road. Osceola County as a whole had 284, and Seminole 194.
- Long commutes are an outer-ring thing. Across the 43 ZIPs, 16% of workers spend 45 minutes or more getting to work. The highest share is Kissimmee west, US 192 (34746, 32%). 68% drive alone, and 17% work from home.
- A lot of Orlando lives in apartments. 44% of households rent, and 23% of homes are in buildings of 10 or more units. That is where private-property tows happen. Your rights after one.
- Heat and storms. 129 days a year at 90°F or hotter at Orlando International (2016 to 2025). Since 2000, 13 tropical storms and hurricanes have passed within 69 miles of downtown, Charley in 2004 within 4 miles. A flooded car after a storm.
