Winch-outs in Orlando

A winch-out pulls a stuck car back onto firm ground with a cable from the truck. Central Florida's sandy shoulders and summer storms make it a common call. If the car is in water deep enough to reach the doors, don't start it.

Why pushing makes it worse

Spinning the wheels in sand digs the car in deeper, and a hot tire can overheat. If two pushes don't do it, stop.

What to tell the company

  • What the car is in (sand or water, say) and roughly how deep.
  • How far it is from pavement. Winch cables have a reach limit.
  • Whether the car runs and steers.

Winching is often priced on top of a normal tow, sometimes by time. Ask for the total with the winch work included.

Water

The National Weather Service says 12 inches of rushing water can carry away most cars. If the car went into water, assume the engine took some in. A flooded car.

Questions people in Orlando ask

Is a winch-out the same as a tow?

No. A winch-out only gets the car back onto firm ground. If it drives fine after, that's the end. If not, the same truck can usually tow it.
